Diane Valentine - Yoga Teacher, Yoga Teacher Trainer and Feldenkrais® Practitioner

Diane Valentine is the Director of The Yoga & Movement Center in downtown Walnut Creek. Recently named Diablo magazine's Best Yoga Teacher 2010, Diane is a passionate yoga teacher, yoga teacher trainer, Feldenkrais® practitioner and author. She teaches weekly classes at the Center and leads yoga retreats in the Bay Area and abroad. Diane has developed a deep understanding of the body, mind, and emotional connections through her work as a yoga teacher, and Feldenkrais practitioner. Today, her methods are aimed at teaching beginning and continuing students to listen to their bodies through the fluid movements of yoga and Feldenkrais, as well as learning to practice “living in the present moment” by becoming aware of and acting on the wholeness of their mind-body-spirit connection.

Diane is committed to and believes in providing a highly individual approach to all her students both in classes and in private sessions. Her classes are grounded in the traditions of B.K.S. Iyengar and are sequenced to strengthen and open various parts of the body – with awareness, joy … and fun! Savasana, the asana which ends all classes, is given due emphasis by Diane, allowing students’ nervous systems to receive the sequences of poses they have traveled through and to take their practice into the wider world. Diane has trained with Senior Iyengar teacher Judith Hanson Lasater, PhD. and has received many certifications from her in the therapeutic and restorative aspects of yoga. Diane has also assisted and traveled with Judith for 10 years learning the finer points of working individually with students. Diane has been a student of yoga for more than 30 years and teacher for over 20. She is a highly experienced RYT500 teacher, certified with The Yoga Alliance, a certified Relax & Renew Trainer® in Restorative Yog and a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner®.

Diane’s Story | Diane’s Journey

“Born with three fused vertebrae in my neck, and with scoliosis, by my early twenties I was beginning to experience pain down my spine and into my low back and hips. By my early thirties the pain was enough to send me to see an orthopedic surgeon. He informed me that nothing could be done ... and that most likely, because of the arthritis already apparent in my spine, I would be in a wheelchair by my fifties. With his words ringing in my ears I began a search to find a way to heal my deteriorating body and found a yoga teacher who had also suffered from arthritis and had been able to successfully combat it through yoga practice. She helped me to begin accepting the possibility of a pain free body and I began the journey toward wholeness. Yoga gave to me the specific tools I needed for my arthritis-stricken body as well as the gift of hope. The more I practiced the more I became aware – not only of my muscles, joints and bones – but also of myself as a body, mind and soul ... and I discovered a microcosm of my own life in my yoga practice ...”

Learning with Diane – Encouragement | Empathy | Experience | Wisdom

Diane has developed a deep understanding of the body, mind, and emotional connections through her work and brings to her students and clients the combined gifts of Yoga, Feldenkrais and her own therapeutic healing methods. Her own life situations have been her teachers and have given her insight into the way our bodies work. She found true healing in Yoga's restorative practices and continues to help and teach students to learn to listen to their body’s own natural wisdom. Her methods are aimed at teaching beginning and continuing students to listen to their bodies through the fluid movements of Yoga and Feldenkrais, as well as learning to practice "living in the present moment" through awareness. Diane places emphasis on developing and maintaining postural alignment to support the organs and the internal functions of our bodies, allowing us to be fully aware, awake, and alive. She offers individual, private sessions using therapeutic methods she has developed over the years that are designed to release tension as well as alleviate chronic and debilitating conditions and help us live our lives fully. Both Yoga and Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement classes are suitable for all body types and ages. Diane has written articles on Restorative Yoga for Menopause and Yoga and the Feldenkrais Method®.

Savasana

Do not let your Ego Rise,

Or your Mind Wander!

But simply…

Draw the gaze of your Eyes

Down into your ribcage and begin to observe your breath

... feel the air cool as it enters your nostrils and notice how it begins to warm it as it moves down into your lungs. mentally follow the rise and fall of your chest as you breath in and out.

“I am breathing In”.

“I am breathing Out”.

Let your Mind

Merge

With your Breath.

Let your Breath

Merge

With your Body.

Let your Body

Merge

With the the Air Around You,

With the Sounds,

With the Ground beneath you.

So that You,

Your Body,

Your Mind,

The Ground

The Sounds ...

All Become One.

No Separation.

One with All.

Intimate with Everything.
